1977

Scott Tait (FEG) writes, “I was pleased to pass the PE Environmental Exam in August and received my Colorado PE license in September.  Soli Deo gloria.  I work for the Town of Castle Rock, Castle Rock Water as a Water Resources Project Manager.  Would love to hear from classmates!”

1979

Barry LeClair (FRM) writes, “Rated Highly Effective High School teacher of the Sciences, Computer Science, and the Humanities: teaching Biology, Chemistry, Earth/Space Science, Environmental Science, Physical Science, Digital Information Technology, and Art History and Appreciation.”

1982

Kenneth Klemow (EFB) retired from his role as Professor and Chair of Biology and Earth Systems Science at Wilkes University in May 2023. Prior to retirement, Ken received Wilkes’ first Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his contributions to education, research, and service during his 41-year career at that institution. Since the late 1980s, he worked closely with the Ecological Society of America (ESA) on their education initiatives, receiving their Eugene Odum Award for Excellence in Ecology Education in 2010, and subsequently serving as one of the architects of ESA’s Four-Dimensional Ecology Education (4DEE) framework.

1986

Faye Rapoport DesPres (ES) writes, “My fifth book, Soul to Soul: Tiny Stories of Hope and Resilience has been published by Huntsville Independent Press. I also co-edited the anthology The Art of Touch: A Collection of Prose and Poetry from the Pandemic and Beyond, recently published by the University of Georgia Press.”

Terrence Croad (LA) received the 2023 Michigan Chapter, American Society of Landscape Architects,  Distinguished Member Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Profession for his work with the DEI Committee to create  week-long summer camps.  “Introduction to Landscape Architecture & Placemaking through Landscape Design” encourages BIPOC high school students to consider Landscape Architecture as a college degree or professional vocation. He currently serves as Director of Planning, City of Southfield, MI, since 2010. Terry is looking forward to officiating his daughter Michelle’s wedding in November in Texas.

1995

David Beers (EFB/FRM) has been awarded the Outstanding Forester award at the Yankee Division’s Society of American Foresters 2024 annual meeting held at the Publick House in Sturbridge, MA. Dave received his bachelors in forestry and biology from SUNY ESF and a master in forestry from the University of Maine. He has over 20 years of consulting forestry experience in Connecticut and served as manager of Connwood foresters from 2006-2020. He also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Connecticut chapter of Society of American Foresters. Today, Dave writes for a local newspaper, serves on the Norfolk Rails to Trails committee and is a State Private Lands Forester with CT DEEP working out of western Connecticut.

1996

Harvard Radcliffe Institute is pleased to announce the selection of Lixing Sun (EFB) as a fellow for the 2024-2025 academic year.  Each fellowship class is drawn from some of the most thoughtful and exciting contemporary scholars in the humanities, sciences, social sciences, and arts-along with writers, journalists, playwrights, and other distinguished professionals. Lixing Sun, a Hrdy fellow at Harvard’s Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, currently holds a Distinguished Research Professor at Central Washington University’s Biological Sciences. He will focus on crafting “Unsexed,” a science nonfiction book that systematically explores the evolutionary dynamics of sex and gender diversity.

1998

2000

Christine Dahlin (EFB) writes, “In the past year, I was promoted to full professor at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown for my research on parrot vocal communication conservation and for teaching courses such as Animal Behavior. I also received the Chancellor’s Service Award, for development of CommuniTEAMS, which provides STEM programs to the community.”

Rachel (Hodgetts) Nelson (FRM) writes, “I am a Senior Foreign Service Officer for the US Department of Agriculture and moved to a new position as Agricultural Counselor for Colombia and Venezuela at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota.”

2004

Steven Noble (FRM) writes, “In January, I was sworn-in for my third four-year term as the Mayor of the City of Kingston. I have had the opportunity to tackle climate change at the local level, while still working on issues including affordable housing, creating complete streets, and updating our zoning code!”

2009

Allison Oakes (EB) writes, “I accepted an Assistant Teaching Professor position at Syracuse University in January, and had a wonderful first semester here. I’m looking forward to many more!”

2011

Stacy Furgal (EFB) and her colleagues received a Special Achievement Award from the Northeastern Division of the American Fisheries Society in the fall of 2023, recognizing their efforts in creating a mentorship program for women and underrepresented genders in fisheries.

2019

Nathaniel Kiel (EFB) writes, “I graduated this spring with a PhD in Integrative Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and will return to ESF in the fall as a post-doctoral researcher!”

2021

John Hooven (SRM) received the Sal Vuocolo Outstanding Service to Forestry Award from the New Jersey Forestry Association (NJFA) at their annual meeting in March.  The award is given as recognition to those that have contributed to the forestry community in New Jersey.  John is the volunteer facilitator of the NJ Woodland Stewards Program, a cooperative training program of NJFA, Rutgers Extension and NJ Forest Service, that trains volunteers for forestry projects.  He served on the board of directors for the NJFA from 2016 until March of 2023, and was previously vice president from 2017 until 2021. John is currently working with University of Maryland Extension as forest stewardship educator and MD/DE master logger program coordinator. He currently serves on the Delaware and Maryland executive state committee for SAF as communications chair, as well as the Maryland Tree Farm committee.
