1975

Clif Flynt (CHE) writes, “My first novel, Promised Rewards, was released by Dark Myth Publications in March 2023. It was the winner of their 2022 Open Contract Challenge contest. Writing fiction is my ‘retirement’ career. I’ve sold short stories to Mystery Magazine, Unidentified Funny Object anthologies, and a few other small press anthologies. 1979

Katherine Killoran (EFB) was promoted to Associate Dean of Academic Programming at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where she works on curriculum, assessment, and student success initiatives.

1985

Jeffrey Auer (EST) was the recipient of a 2023 Public Water System Award – Distinguished Operator Award – Western Massachusetts. Jeff oversees operations in West Springfield, which has challenges common to many cities, such as staffing and organizational issues. Jeff has helped move projects forward to address different pressure zones, to sever the surface water source, address storage and other distribution improvements and to beef up the operations and controls at the remaining groundwater sources. These well sources are subject to multiple contaminants, including PFAS6. Most recently, Jeff prepared and instituted the SOP to minimize use of the source with the highest PFAS, both to prevent breakthrough, and to extend the life of the GAC treatment facility. In addition, Jeff communicates well with his constituents and with MassDEP regarding complaints, significant changes, and other issues.

Greg Gilbert (EFB) writes, “Excited to have published The Evolutionary Ecology of Plant Disease (Oxford University Press) with my wife and long-time scientific collaborator, Ingrid Parker. I was inspired to follow in the footsteps of my ESF professors Paul Manion and David Griffin, who wrote such inspiring textbooks on tree diseases and fungal physiology. The book is in part dedicated to my transformative ESF mentor C. J. K. Wang, who instilled in me a life-long fascination with all that fungi can do.”

1989

Alan Baczkiewicz (EFB) writes, “I have been teaching sixth grade science for 22 years and became a New York State Master Teacher Fellow in 2022. I was very fortunate to have a book published through Adams Media, an imprint of Simon and Schuster, in the spring of 2022. The Backyard Bird Sanctuary is an introduction to attracting 50 species of birds to your yard. The book includes information on identification, nesting, water sources, types of seed and feeders. In addition, I write a blog for beginning birders at basicsofbirding.com”  

1995

Avery Yale Kamila (ES) was hired by the Maine Historical Society as an advisor for the exhibition CODE RED: Climate, Justice, and Natural History Collections, which is on view in the Portland, Maine, Museum until Dec. 30, 2023.

1997

Felicity Arengo (EFB, MS ‘94, PhD ‘97) retired from her position at the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation at the American Museum of Natural History, where she served as the Associate Director for 18 years. From 1997 – 2004, Dr. Arengo was the Assistant Director of Latin America and the Caribbean at the Wildlife Conservation Society and served as Program Officer of the World Parks Endowment from 2000-2002. Dr. Arengo will continue as the Americas Coordinator of the IUCN Flamingo Specialist Group, a role she has held since graduating in 1997, and remain active in several professional working groups and boards while pursuing a certificate in Landscaping with Native Plants at the Native Plant Center at SUNY Westchester Community College. 

2003

2007

In June 2022, Dr. Karen Howard (FCH) was awarded the 2021 Arthur S. Flemming Award for outstanding federal service in Leadership and Management, one of only 12 recipients nationwide. She serves as Director of Science and Technology Assessment and as Acting Chief Scientist at the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO).

2011

Shawn Emmons (ERE) has been promoted to senior manager of facilities/environmental, health and safety (EHS) at SRC, Inc. Emmons has been with the enterprise since 2011 with increasing facilities and EHS responsibilities including project management, infrastructure, and facility operation improvements. He has an associate degree in general studies from Central Texas College, an associate degree in mechanical engineering from Onondaga Community College, a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from SUNY Polytechnic Institute, and a master’s degree in construction management from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He is a Certified Energy Manager, and a member of the Association of Energy Engineers, the international Facility Management Association, the Central New York Veterans Parade and Expo, and the Onondaga County Veterans Service Advisory Board.

Kerri Murphy (LA) writes, “Started new job with Hollander Design Landscape Architects in January 2023.”

2012

Erin Sweeney (EFB) writes: “After graduating in 2012 with a B.S. in biotechnology, I went on to University at Buffalo and earned a Doctorate in Dental Surgery. I have been working in private practice as a general dentist since 2016 in the Buffalo Area. ESF will always hold a special place in my heart and the education I received set me up for a successful future as a healthcare provider.” 

2023
